Gateway course management software
How to install from the download (in easy steps!)
These notes refer to the download of the latest version of the software. Other downloads (e.g. the manual) are done in a similar manner. 1. Exit from the package if it is currently running. 2. Click on the 'Download' button. A dialogue will ask you if you wish to 'Open' or 'Save' the file.
I've always preferred to 'Save' as, if the installation needs to be repeated, or I wish to install in more than one place, then 'Save'ing the download file makes this easy. I always save it to my desktop, then, when I have completely finished with the download, I can delete it. An example of this dialogue is shown below.
3. Once you have completed the download to your desktop exit from the web site (having read and maybe even have printed the notes concerning the latest enhancements) and double-click on the download on your desktop. The download is called GW2.zip.
When you double-click on it, it will open into 'winzip', as shown below. If your screen does NOT look like that shown below then skip ahead to the alternative set of instructions below.
You will see one or more files to be extracted. You will be likely to find both the program (gw.exe) and the latest files of standards from NZQA (standards.txt) in the zip file. Click on the 'Extract' button and navigate to your \gw directory. An example of this is shown below.
If you do not know where your \gw directory is then you can find out by right-clicking on your desktop short-cut and selecting 'Properties'. The location will be displayed as the target. An example of this is shown below.
Once you've identified the directory where the Gateway package resides, click 'Extract' and the file(s) will be extracted. You should receive the following warning along the way. The answer to this question is 'Yes to all'. Remember that the download will not touch your database. It is only the program (and the latest standards file) which will be updated by the download process. Once you've finished the process you can delete the downloaded zip file from your desktop. The alternative processThe alternative process begins with a screen which looks like that shown below. While these instructions relate to the Star package, they are almost exactly the same as those for Gateway. Only the name of the program file and directories are changed. For 'star.exe' read 'gw.exe' and for '\star' read '\gw'. From this screen you wish to 'Extract all files' so click on the area labelled that on the left hand side of the screen. This will lead you to the following screen:
Click 'Next' to proceed to : This screen wants to know where to put the extracted files. For Gateway this will be into your \gw directory. If you do not know where your \gw directory is then you can find out by right-clicking on your desktop short-cut and selecting 'Properties'. The location will be displayed as the target. An example of this is shown below.
This (e.g. c:\vb5\gw') is what you want to appear in the area highlighted in blude previous screen. You can copy (highlight the text and press Ctrl-C) and paste (go to the new area and press Ctrl-V) the new file destination. If you are not comfortable with this process then click on the 'Browse' button and you will be presented with the following dialogue. Navigate to your \gw directory (shown as star in the illustration below).
Click OK once the directory is highlighted and you will move to the next screen.
This screen (which is the same as that shown before you clicked 'Browse' allows you to confirm where the extracted files are to go. Once you are happy with the destination, click 'Next' and the files will be extracted. All going well you SHOULD receive the following message (which will refer to 'gw.exe'):
This should appear as you are about to replace the old version of the program with the new one. Remember that the download will not touch your database. It is only the program (and the latest standards file) which will be updated by the download process. Once you've finished the process you can delete the downloaded zip file from your desktop. What can go wrong?1. If you simply extract the program to somewhere else and try to run it then it will report that it is in the wrong place. (It knows this because it cannot find e.g. the database). 2. You may end up with the old version back again. This happens when your computer has 'cached' the previous download and is simply giving it back to you again when you try to download the new version. To fix this you have to remove the cached version from your computer. To do this, go into your browser (e.g. Windows Explorer) and click 'Tools' followed by 'Internet options' and, under 'Browsing history' click 'Delete'.
This will lead to the following screen via which you should select ONLY 'Temporary Internet Files' then click OK. Then return to re-download the new version of the program. This time it will not give you back the previous version.
